Unfortunately, a large percentage of performance problems are not the result of individual knowledge/skill gaps, they are the result of process deficiencies and/or the social dynamics between team members. When this is the case, process analysis and redesign is often called for. When processes are dysfunctional, it is highly likely that there is a great deal of friction among the team members charged with making the process work. Consequently steps usually need to be taken to improve the interaction among team members. Our recommendation is that these issues be addressed simultaneously.
Change Leadership Resources can provide your organization with extensive practical experience with process improvement and team performance improvement.
Process Improvement - Value Stream Mapping
Value stream mapping is group process from the Lean Six Sigma toolbox used to analyze the flow of material and information within an organization. A completed Value Stream Map (VSM) captures the what, when, who, and how long, of each step of a process from end to end in a method that is easy to understand. Typically the VSM is created by those working the process with the goal of documenting the “as-is” state. The process is measured and data is gathered to document the baseline performance. Most significantly, A VSM allows the team to easily identify the non-value-added steps in the process. From the VSM, the future, “desired state” can be defined. Participants in the mapping activity provide suggested improvements and implement an action plan.
